Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone was using the Amerifone IP telephone service from behind a SME server? There service looks good and seems very cost effective. There FAQ regarding firewalls was answered like this:
The ideal setup for the Amerifone residential user is behind a simple NAT with the Amerifone issued Cisco ATA 186 having a private IP address. With this setup, no ports have to be opened up for Amerifone to work properly. We take advantage of the simple rules of NAT to keep the ATA 186 available at all times. Most of our customers just plug and play because Amerifone has designed the service to work behind these simple NATs. Firewall users still can use Amerifone service by giving the ATA 186 rights to access certain ports on the Internet. These ports are 5060 & 5061 UDP, 69 UDP, 53 UDP, 123 UDP and 10,000 - 20,000 UDP.
As I have never tried opening any ports or forwarding them this makes no sense to me! Can any one tell me if they think it is possible to do the above with SME? Or should I just keep paying through the nose with Bellsouth?
Any help or comments appreciated.
