Hi,

I just installed Windows 2000 on a new computer that is connected to an SME5.6 gateway.  My problem is that when I connect to the Internet using IE5.0 (and 6.0), I get the following error message:

"Access control configuration prevents your request from being allowed at this time..."

Mozilla works without any problems.

I have already tried manually setting the proxy servers to the SME I/P address using port 8080 and 3128 but I still could not connect using IE.  I have also tried using both static and DHCP for my I/P addresses.

When I connect to the office VPN on this computer, however, IE works.

Please help.  BTW, I have Dansguardian running onthe SME server as well.

If Mozilla works, why bother with IE? Moz is infinitely better.  Or, you could call MS, pay $250, and maybe get an answer.

Because there are some things in the Windows world that require IE (Windows update, for example).

There are many in the "windows world" who believe you should manually select and download updates, rather than use windows update. You don't need IE to download updates, Mozilla works just fine.

As this article describes, there are some updates that shouldn't be installed, as they cause more harm than good. If you use the MS auto-update service, you're hoist by your own petard. In fact, MS makes a server product that allows you to pick and choose the updates, and serve them to your Windows clients. They know that serious admins won't simply install everything -- automatically.

dhcpd problem? WAS: Squid/Dansguardian/IE/W2k

Okay, here's what happened,  A few days ago, I changed dhcpd.conf (through the template) to use fixed-address on the defined client computers.  It looked like everything was working fine until one of the PC's hard disk crashed and I had to do a fresh Win2k install on it.  Then suddenly the frech computer cannot browse using IE.  Mozilla works and I could also ping the websites on the PC's command line.

Further, other internet access does not seem to work.  For example, online games cannot connect and anti-virus updates do not work.  When I VPN to the office network, however, it starts working.

Now I removed the fixed-address from dhcpd.conf and restarted, the new PC suddenly works.  Could this be a dhcpd issue?  I am using SME 5.6 update 5.
