SME6beta3 email problem
« on: October 24, 2003, 08:30:55 AM »
Hi All,
I have just installed SME6beta3 for testing before I upgrade my SME5.6 server.
It is set in server only mode behind my SME5.6 box which is in server and gateway mode using a cable modem to connect to the internet. I have set the 5.6 boxes IP address as the gateway for the SME6beta3 box and it connects to the internet OK (using the test internet connection option in server console). I have installed the latest updates to the SME6beta3 box. My problem is: I cannot get it to collect email from my isp pop server. I have got the email settings in the server-manager set as multidrop (also tried standard) pop and imap access set to allow access only from local networks (also tried public access). Webmail is enabled.
I have sent email from adminto my user name and received it, replied and admin received it so the email works internally. I have sent a test message to my isp email from my user and received it OK (checked using their webmail) but still sme6 won't collect it for me. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Del

Martin

Yep, had exactly the same problem until I downloaded the updates.

And make sure that you run the correct commands after installing these rpm's

/sbin/e-smith/signal-event post-upgrade
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event reboot

Hi Martin, Hi Nick,
I have already done both of these, and still no email. One question, when I go to get the updates I see a folder for SME6beta/beta3 and a folder for SME6beta3, sI have downloaded both and installed them all, should I have done this? I did install both the updates seperately and run the 2 commands mentioned each time.

just try logging in and running these two commands again and see how it goes.

/sbin/e-smith/signal-event post-upgrade
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event reboot

I had to do this once and then all was fine.

As a matter of interest when you log in to the server manager or the console does it still tell you that you are using a beta version or does it just say version 6.0? If you have aplied all the updates there will be no mention of beta anymore.

Hi Rick,
Ok I have tried runnuing the 2 commands again but no luck, so (before I saw your last post) I reinstalled SME5.6 with the latest updates and that didn't work either. I am begining to think that it must be the fact that it is set up in server only mode. I have used the same email settings in my main SME5.6 server (set as server and gateway) and it collects the email no problem. If your can't get email from the outside world in server only mode what is the point of giving it internet access? If I reinstall SME6 with the latest updates in server and gateway (or private server and gateway) how can I connect it to the internet through my existing SME5.6 gateway? Any help would is appreciated. Thanks again for your suggestions, I am off to install SME6 again now.

Hi All,
OK I have now got SME6beta3 on, downloaded the updates from the link in Martin's post, checked in server-manager and there is no mention of beta as in Rick's post and low and behold it is working! I can only assume that I didn't install the correct updates. Any how thanks for your help and suggestions.
Does anyone know if the following add-ons work in SME6?
dungog.net multipop (I know I'm asking for trouble as it as taken me 3 days to get the 1 email working!!)
Darell May's backup2workstation
SARG Reports
SquidGuard

I haven't tried the add ons that you are asking about, I use dansguardian on mine and it works fine. I don't think you would have a problem with Sqiudguard from what I know about it (I have a friend that uses it, and I haven't heard any complaints so far) I have only recently changed to version 6 on my production box after testing it for a few months on a couple of others and am still working on the add ons, just doing them one at a time and making sure they are working fine before I add the next one. So far I have only added Dansguardian, Awstats and phpsysinfo which are all working fine so far.

Nice to see that I am not alone.  I have exactly the same problem using  SME6beta3 everything seems to work except collecting multidrop from our pop3 at the isp. I have tried 4 fresh installs and 2 updates over the top of SME5.6 but despite multiple checking of all the settings it does not collect mail.
The SME5.6 was working fine before applying the update and when I switch to another pc with 5.6 loaded, the waiting mail is downloaded first time. Does anyone have any better ideas than continually reinstalling until it works (we hope) ???
We have an external modem and dial-up connection.

I have had problems with version 6 after beta 2 with mail collection, however the post beta 3 updates have resolved these issues and it now works fine.

Make sure that you have correctly applied all of the updates that can be found here

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/e-smith/dev/6.0dev/updates/6.0beta3/RPMS/

and of course make sure that you follow the usual install procedure

In order to be sure to activate these updates, install the RPMs using:

rpm -Uhv *rpm

If you get any error messages that any of these rpm's are already installed, you can remove the ones noted and run the install command again (you may get this depending on what you have already tried installing)

then run these commands:

/sbin/e-smith/signal-event post-upgrade
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event reboot

Please report any system malfunction to smebugs@mitel.com.

Brian,

Did you check /var/log/maillog for entries containing the command "fetchmail"?

You could also compare the /etc/fetchmail files on your 5.6 and 6b3 machines for clues. If they look the same, run /etc/fetchmail manually on your 6b3 box to see what happens.

As it says in the RELEASE-NOTES.txt file, and has been said maybe hundreds of times here, if you find any malfunctions, you should report them in detail to smebugs@mitel.com. Be sure to apply any updates and follow the instructions in the README file from the same directory first.
