Is there any way to have names longer than 12 characters?

Alternatively, is there a way to create some kind of alias?  I need to map existing email addresses with long usernames onto the e-smith mailserver.

Not while preserving all features - things break with longer user names.

Sure, install e-smith-aliases from:

http://e-smith.gormand.com.au/4.0-preview/

You can then do this from the web manager.
