kernel panic: VFS unable to mount root fs on 3:06

Anyone got any ideas how to fix this? The server crashed sometime over the weekend and I'm thinking the HD may have some damage. I cant even boot into single user mode and I didn't create a re-installation disk (I know, I know) I was thinking of running e2fsck from a Tom's root boot disk? Anyone have any suggestions?

Lloyd,
I would visit http://www.knoppix.net, download Knoppix 3.3 and learn how to use it . It's a self booting Linux distro which will allow you to repair your failing system ,and also give you a chance to save your data before it's too late. The way I look at system failures is, as long as I have my data, I can always re-install. I used this tool on Windows crashed PCs (NTFS Partitions as well). This CD will become your favorite rescue system.
