Topic: Server requires login from renamed user

I have this situation on two different sites.

SME 6.0 fully patched server only in a workgroup. Windows XP Home on which the user has been renamed to a username which is available on the server. After the user logs in to XP they cannot access any of the server resources until they complete the server login dialog (with the same username and password they are using for XP).

Any tips or hints most welcome

I had the same problem with XP Pro, the user name and password were identical to that of the user on SME 5.6 but still you had to re-enter the password to get onto the server, never found out why and in the end I just renamed the existing user to something like username_old and then created a new user with the original name and password and Hey Presto got on to the server resources no problem! Lef tit like this for a few days then copied all the original user's docs, favourites etc and pasted them into the new user and finally deleted the old user. I wish I could find out why I had to do this. I have 3 XP machines connected and I never had the problem on the other two!

I have found a couple of things.

1 If you map a network drive to a share on the server and use the "Connect Using a Diiferent Name" option then use the new name and password that seems to take effect for access to the whole server.

2 (The Proper Way). Use Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Users you will see an account which has been renamed in User Accounts in Control Panel has Name=Original and FullName=NewName.
Right click the account and use Rename from the menu fixes the problem. Even then the folder under Documents and Settings still has the original name. This works in XP Pro - off to try Home

Well the users administration panel is not available in XP Home but you can get to a similar dialogue by running
control userpassword2 from  Start/Run.

There you can change the name of the user account.
