Setting Up DNS - NOT DYNAMIC
« on: November 27, 2003, 02:34:20 PM »
I am trying to set up an SME server within my office in server-only configuration, but I still want it to allocate IP addresses in the office via DHCP, and act as a DNS for the computers in the office.  How do I set up SME Server so it can look up IP addresses for host names?  Do I need to have it contact another DNS server?  If so how?  If not, why can't I ping www.yahoo.com from the SME server?

When you run through the 'Configure this server' (option 2) from the console menu (also part of the initial server config where you set the server to be server-only', you can set the DHCP options and also set an IP for your gateway and for the master DNS server.

When I have used an e-smith in server only mode I set both the above fields to the IP address of my gateway e-smith (or my firewall/router if I'm not using an e-smith as the gateway) and this seems to do the trick.
