Connecting to e-smith 5.6 Samba domain controller ..
« on: December 20, 2003, 05:18:42 PM »
Hello !

I have just made a connection to a samba domain controller running on a e-smith 5.6 The client is a MS XP so it took a while to find out about the regestry changes that were rquired ad the samba controller emulates a NT 4.0 domain. Used some of this info:

http://wiki.contribs.org/index.php?module=article&view=10&MMN_position=33:33

No after the logon works, there is still some things I really don't understand.

1. When you want to log into a samba domain, is it then neccessary to have both an account for the PC and one other account for the user ?? (I think the MS documentation says something about a Machine account, but I see no place to set up such an account at the samba control panel. So I set up an acount for the PC as the "machine usere" and one for myself as "the logon user"

This is inncorrect isn't it ?? (Even though I think Windows administrators speak about "machine acounts" I think. How can this be ??

2. Change the user password at the domain controller is it then supposed to work in such a way that this also will make an automatic change of te passwoord at the client ?

3. "Roaming profiles" this means that you can go from client to client and then have tha same windows profile or windows design on each machine ? Is this right ? Is it recomended to use this function or will this just make everything slower ?

Best reg Arne.

Excuse me for a little bit stupid questions (Had been working all day with this.)

I have now tried to take avay the "machine acounts", and it still works on the e-smith.

I have also tried to change the account password on the samba/e-smith server and this also seems to be changing the password on the XP client.

Im still wondering about this "machine account" problem as I believe Microsoft administrators speaks about machins that has an acount and that is included in the domain .. Am I wrong ??

Have not found out about "roaming profiles".

I went out to my work and tried to log on a 2000 server the sama way as I can do it at home at my samba server. The Win 2000 domain controller first asked for my account name and password and then for the computer name. Then it refused the connection because the computer name were not in the list of computers in that domain.

I think my question can be asked in a little bit simpler and more precise way that might be of general interest for allmost all e-smith users:

"What is actually the practical differnce between a "classic" NT-4 domain controller like that contained in a e-smith/samba installation and Active Domain Controller contained in a Windows 2000 server ??"

"Even shorter: What is the difference between a new e-smith domain controller and a new Microsoft domain contrller."

Hope there is somebody out there who knows about these more Microsoft related things.

Now that is a GOOD question, can someone explain what it is that Active Directory does in PLAIN english please? I tried and gave up in disgust, spit.

p.s. off to check on the samba site to see if they can explain what Microsoft can't.

Did you find the Samba online book ? Chapter one says a litle bit about diffrences.

http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/samba2/book/toc.html

I believe MS Active directory actually is a kind of derivative of the old Novell NDS Network Directory system, a system where you can make administration of all servers and network resourses from one common administration panel.

I try to read a bit and to find out about theese things just now.

If you find some interesting info, please leave a message !

Arne,
I'm not an expert, but I believe during the process of joining the domain a script is run (machineaccount-create) to automatically create the machine account.
