backup2ws - ver. 6.0
« on: December 22, 2003, 11:53:58 PM »
I am running SME v 6.0 final. I was running v 5.6. I did a 911 backup. All went well. I did a clean install of v 6.0. But how do I restore? I cannot see the 911 job in the server-manager...it was created in 5.6. I did a test backup which worked fine. Also the 911 backup is on the windows share.

One other question. I have been searching the forums for hours but have yet to see a how to for this (other than the one using mc), is there one?

I always search first...but this time no luck...even at D. Mays ste.

Any help appreciated.

I have it showing on sme version 6.0 but it will not run
I just copied the file list out of the 911 and created a
normal backup you can set the size just the same if you are backing up for or to a cdrom

In Th backup2ws panel just select the option
Click here to enable the Disaster Recovery backup job.
and that will add the 911 job.
Then use the restore function.
Note there was a problem with restoring that required a second /home/e-smith entry in the backup job in order for all the files to be correctly restored. Search here or D May's forum re this.

Thanks Ray

But I am using sme 6.0 and although backup to workstation says
it is starting the 911 backup job it does not start

I have had to copy the file list from it and just create a simple backup
it starts and completes in a few minutes but I loose the addwd features
such as mysql dump

I believe it is something to do with version 6.0

Dear Gregory

There is a problem with backup2ws on v6b3 and v6.0 final, see below.

Here is the location of Darrells forums
Generally here
http://myezserver.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=9

and specifically here re the earlier restore issue I mentioned
http://myezserver.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=368

I also see some mention of problems with backup2ws on v6.0, see
http://myezserver.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=528

and Darrell May provides this answer
quote
"Backup2ws is not compatible with SME6.0
It is a contrib I will review and update in 2004.
Regards,
Darrell May "

So I guess we will have to wait until a new release of backup2ws is done by Darrell for it to work correctly on v6.0 final.

A Plea to Darrell May,
Please update the backup2ws contrib a soon as you can, it will be greatly appreciated by many many users including myself.
This is a very valuable piece of software that  is the missing piece in the standard backup procedures that come with sme server.
Thanks &
Regards

Thanks Again Ray

I will have to wait and see what Darrell does as he has written a great piece of software for e-smith

I hope that sme or whatever the new dev edition is stays alive as it is the best server system I have found

Fedora seems to be promising but no telling yet though sme has been way behind using redhat version 7.3 I use redhat 9.0 on most systems and have found it to be the best they have done

I have Fedora - very stable & with plesk easy to administer on 1 box and it so far would be my choice if - god forbid - we don't get e-smith to survive

I made some work on finding out about backupprocedures a few days ago.

One of the things I was doing was to open and go trough the backupfiles that were created by the backup2ws contrib and the standard backup feature via the admin panel. I also looked in to the files produced by the flexbackup.

What I found out were that the flexbackup produced its own file format, while it seems that the backup2ws contrib and the standard admin panel function for backup produced a backupfile that has the same format, and approx the same data content, as far as I can se, compared with that produced by a 911/backup2ws backup.

So what I believe could work would be to use the standard backup function for a restore of a backupfile that is produced by the 911/backup2ws (Of course if it is not more than one backupfile.)

Shoud eventuelly be performed on a test server only, as there is a risk it will not work.

Leave a word if it should be tried and if it should work.

There's a BETA version of backup2ws over at Darrel's site - http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dmay/smeserver/6.x/beta/backup2ws/
I am about to try it on a test server, I'll post here when i have done a backup / format / reinstall /restore ..... :)

BTW, I agree - Darrell, you "May" (sorry...) have saved more sysdmins a whole sh*tload of work thatn you'll ever know by making the backup2ws contrib! Thanks.
