How to turn of updatedb ?
« on: September 09, 2000, 12:39:41 AM »
Someone told me that the noise at the startup was because of updatedb scanning my hda. Does somebody know how to turn it off so i don't hear that irritating noise every morning ?

How do I get gcc properly in e-smith server and gateway ?

I d/l a uptime log program but it needs gcc for compiling.
But e-smith hasn't got it so what is the easiest way to install it ?

Thanks, Daniel

leave your e-smith on all the time, this isn't a MS operating system that can't take constant uptime.

e-smiths recomended installation procedure is to first try to locate a rpm of the items you want to add. if that is not possible then find a redhat system that you can compile the program on and move the binary program over to  the e-smith.

If that is not possible, search back thru the forum, the programs you need to add have been posted several times.

Daniel,

Try this site:http://jdrowell.com/Linux/Papers/gcc
Scroll to the bottom and look for the line that says:
[You can get either the Source RPM or Binary RPM. Note that this is just the basic Binary RPM compiled with i386 optimization. If you would like to get all related RPMs, or one optimized for i586 or i686, just look for them here]

The links should be obvious.

Daniel,

Yes, we all known about that drive "chatter" that goes on for 15 minutes after starting e-Smith. :=}
Tim is right. Just leave the e-smith machine running (like we all do). Remove the monitor, keyboard, and mouse. E-smith is designed for NON STOP (24 X 7) operation. That is the power of E-smith & RedHat Linux.

My home-office server is e-smith. It serves web pages, handle email for several people, and is the internet gateway for our home lan. Connection is DSL.

updatedb is actually a good thing (powerful search engine) so when you type

'locate whateverthatfilewas' it will find it for you on your whole system
