dedicated or dialup
« on: September 22, 2000, 03:52:08 PM »
I install e-smith server 4.0 and everything is working good.  This is really a good product, just in case someone would have doubt about it.

I set my server as a dedicated gateway/server behind an isdn router (3com office connect)  I have a record at yi.org as xxx.yi.org and set my domain on the server to xxx.yi.org.

I can send mail from my workstation to another, send mail outside but can't recieve mail from outside.

even if this seems to be dedicated do I have to have mail settings set to multidrop.

By the way how can I forward all mail for xxx.yi.org to my ISP's mail box.  When I give may isp mail server (server where I download my mail) I have a relay denied message. Does this mean I need to give them an smtp server for secondary mail server.

I hope I'm clear enough (not sure)

Thanks in advance for your help

I'm not so sure this is what you want.  Do you have a registered domain name?

This usually is the result of your e-smith configuration not coinciding with the services your ISP are providing.

If you are on a dedicated connection it is preferable to use the \"Standard\" email retrieval mode.

If you have a registered domain name, then you want your e-smith server and gateway to be your primary mail server, and a POP mail account with your ISP to be your secondary.

Let us know how it works out for you.

Thanks for the answer

Yes I have a registered domain name host at my ISP, but is there a way I can  set the same domain for my local network without interfering with my ISP ?

I'd rather avoid multidrop POP boxes whenever possible. If you are
configured to use SMTP ("standard") delivery, you should just use
SMTP's secondary MX (mail exchanger) facilities to provide the backup.

I recommend the following:
   - e-smith server/gateway as primary mail server
   - another system (possibly at your ISP) as a "secondary MX"

Please note: you _must_ ask someone to be your secondary MX,
you can't just nominate them and hope it works. The secondary site
must be configured to accept and queue your mail. You should also
test this to confirm that it does work.

Thanks, things get clearer but my ISP doesn't seem to be willing to help me.  He says I must have a static IP. Here after is their answer :

"It is not possible to redirect mail in this way to our servers - this is
because of the security setup we employ so that our services cannot be abused.
To have a system like this you really need to have a static IP address ,
you could then use our Zone record systems to setup a mail server system."

So where can I find someone to be my secondary mx, is this a service you can find like free dns service,... (probably a stupid question, I guess I 'd better change my ISP)

I know that the problem would be solved with a static IP but I'm connected with isdn router and use dhcp.

Thanks a lot for you help

URGENT: dial-up with static IP

Where do I set my static IP number on a dial-up e-smith server? (I have got a static IP number which I _MUST_ use for a semi-permanent dial-up connection).
