Now that I have your attention...I am assuming that you have some affiliation with e-smith so can you please reply to this question since you have elected not to answer the one before? I would like to know the procedure to allow remote connections using e-smith. Would this be accomplished in ipchains ( if so, can or will there be adequate instructions on how this is works?) or do I need to use a different feature? Please acknowledge....without decent support how could this messageboard exist for any length of time>

best regards,
buddy

Buddy,

If you will be more specific I will try and answer your question. What kind of remote connection are you trying to use?

I use netsupport that connects on port 5405. I would like to know if IPCHAINS is the way that I need to go...and if so could someone please explain the correct syntax, because the how-to's are confusing.

I apologize to anyone that I may have ticked off...I am just trying to learn this.

I don't know what netsupport is, but I guess it has nothing to do with linux. If my guess is correct, you want to port forward port 5405 to a machine on your internal LAN. Search for "port forward" on this and the General Discussion bulletin boards.

Port forwarding will be a feature of some future version of the server and gateway, but it is not supported currently.

Buddy,

Sorry but I am not familiar with that software. I am assuming you need to forward the connection to a server behind the e-smith server.

If you go to the General Forum and do a search for "port forwarding" you will find a some great suggestions on how to accomplish this. These messages are posted from users who have successfully implemented what you are looking to do.

...and yes you will find syntax examples there :)

I really didn't like the tone of your message. Charlie has always been most helpful. I am sure you would get even better support if you have actually paid for the product or signed up for support.

Speaking from personal experience.... YOU GUYS ROCK!

I've asked some pretty stupid questions of the Charlie, Gordon, et al, and have always received a very professional and appropriate response. Fortunately, I've had the good fortune to do this privately (or at least not in these forums.)

In my estimation the quality of the product is a direct reflection of the people who created it, maintain it, and support it.

Now, if you'll pardon me, all that a$$ kissing has tired me out!  ;-)

I have exactly the same feeling as Scott and Gerald - Charlie IS a very helpful person at e-smith. Same goes for Gordon.
I've ALWAYS got an answer sooner or later even to my Linux-Lamer type questions.
However I never forgot I'm using an UNSUPPORTED version of the product, which apparently happened to buddy...
That's why some people tried to protest, as the tone of the initial posting wasn't very friendy. The apology has been accepted apparently, so no big deal :)  That also tells something about the class of the guys at e-smith.
Keep it up, folks :)
