Topic: inserting a PATH= into rc.local

I have installed jre1.2.2 into my esmith 4.0, but I need to execute java in anywhere in the LiNUX box - so I am trying to find out how I can do it - they say I need to insert 'PATH=$PATH/home/jre1.2.2/bin' into my rc.local script but I do not know how to script.
