while imp is a great product if you have the latest browsers, it didn't suit me as some of my broswers didn't have compatible javascript eg opera, konquoror some netscapes

i eventually found squirrelmail on sourceforge and installed it in under an hour

it runs on purish php so avoid problems with javascript and doesn't need extra perl modules
folders only sort of work so far , but that may just be me.

thanks to dan brown for the work he has done on php to enable the painless install.
i may make a rpm but anyone who can find the root shell could install it as it is

You could, of course, have just gone to www.e-smith.org, found and downloaded my squirrel and e-smith-squirrel RPMs, and had it done in five minutes

No, I've found that folder creation and listing does not work correctly, which is why I haven't made much of a fuss about my squirrelmail RPMs.

I agree with your comments about squirrelmail, and think it will be a good candidate once the squirrelmail team get some crucial bugs out of their code. I plan to get hold of the new O'Reilly IMAP book, which might help me to track down the folder problem. (Luke Drumm, I've fixed your ibay access problem - you offered $$ - care to buy me the book I need?)

Sorry Charlie,

I've been going through a few reinstalls of my e-smith server and thus haven't had much of a chance to actually fiddle with ibay access and such delights.

As life would have it, my up and coming (hopefully) cable installation with Telstra will nueter my need for the Dial-up Ibay fix (as far as a I understand).

I shall install and test your 4.0.12-44 base asap.

In regard to the book, are you still in the Sydney region? And is this the book you're after:

i just looked at your squirrelmail readme, it's not very encouraging
i think it's good enough for my site, given the alternatives
so i'll be watching the upgrades.

what do you think of phpGroupware, that was next on my list to investigate.

I remember checking out the web site for phpgroupware a while ago, and it didn't look like it was very complete--it may have progressed since then.  You might also check out TWIG.

I have installed both TWIG & phpGroupware a while back. I installed them on the original release on Dan's php, MySql & e-smith modules. Both worked great!!!

I had a few discussions with Tim Litwiller about the installation process - we had different installation method but both seemed to work.

Basically he would setup a ibay eg TWIG and copy the files there. I chose to install the same way that webmail (horde) installs - under the /home/e-smith/files/primary/html/twig directory.

TWIG have released a new version recently & they say that they have fixed all the bugs.

phpGroupware were also planning a major over-haul of their product - but I am not sure of their progress!

Twig is looking very good, as Brandon says both ways seem to work, I use an Ibay because that suits my way of organizing better, but putting it in primary may be a slight bit easier.

PhpGroupWare is in the midst of a complete reorganization and rewrite of the software components but they are keeping a working and devel tree and so far it is looking pretty good. If you want to use the current it works fine. The redone version is supposed to use be quicker and use less resources on the server so some may want to wait for that.

Both are nice systems.

An i-bay will not be suitable as it won't protect your configuration files - they may contain sensitive data.

However if you don't use an i-bay (see my contrib e-smith-squirrelmail add-on, for instance) then you should be aware that you will have problems if you install twig to run via http://domain.name/twig and then you add a user group or i-bay called twig.

The e-smith development team is investigating these issues - discussion will take place on the developer mailing list.

Hi this may be out of topic but I notice that all of you are talking of implementing or installing other software on ibay but i have not heard of any fixed to ibays yet regarding with the following error:

Not Found
The requested URL /intranet was not found on this server.

I agree - that why I chose to do it that way.

The 2 main reasons I chose to try it this way were:

1) I found easier to setup & I don't have all these 'vunerable' ibays in my network neighbourhood.

2) I want to try standardise installation of this kind of software - webmail installation is pretty similar to this - we need to try and standardise they way add-ons, contrib etc are add to the E-smith server. E-smith have set out with a specific architecture of their product - i definately feel that trying setup a more standard way of customizing will help , not only from a developement point of view but also from a new user perspective.

If you are using the configuration where web server access is officially supported (i.e. dedicated server and gateway mode with ethernet connection to the Internet via router) and you cannot access your i-bays, then you should send email to bugs@e-smith.com.

If you are using dialup or PPPoE over ethernet (where web server access is not officially supported) then you might like to grab the newest popt, initscripts and e-smith-base RPMs from my contrib area. I believe that your problem is fixed. If it doesn't work for you, please e-mail me details.

My understand of imp, it the great part of it is that it is server based application so the fact that it's using php is transparent to the end user, what web browers(besides lynx) cannot use a imp based server.
