e-smith backup

e-smith backup

I am looking for a fairly easy backup solution for e-smith.  I don't want to use the e-smith-manager, I want to backup to tape.  I tried to use the flexbackup rpm, but I couldn't get it to work.  It needed some other files.  I'd like to know what others are using to backup to tape.  I would also be interested in knowing if the e-smith staff is going to support a particular solution as well as what they are using.

Thanks,

JB

Thanks Garret for your response.  I am fairly new to linux, did you have to install all of the other packages that are required for taper to work, or were they already installed by e-smith.

John,

Quite honestly I can't remember, and to qualify "or disqualify" myself, I am by no means an expert in linux. To boot, much of what I do is probably done against common methods. With that said, try to install the tape rpm on your machine and see what it tells you. If the other packages aren't installed it will tell you. If you need them I think you can find them at rpm find, http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/.

Let me know if this helps, if it's not clear enough, or if you need a little more help.

Taper works great.  Nothing required but the e-smith taper rpm.  I've tested with a SCSI DAT4 tape drive.  I'm going to try with  an IDE tape drive very soon.  The only issue I had was using Windows NT telnet to view the Taper menu screen.  Windows telnet does not display the screen well.  I upgraded to Dave's Telnet to solve this.

Taper for e-smith: ftp://ftp.e-smith.com/pub/e-smith/contrib/RPMindex/RPMS/i386/taper-6.9b-3.i386.html
