Title: POP3 connection from outside the LAN
Post by: Ralph Dorr on December 15, 2000, 09:46:11 PM
Whenever a user tries to check the POP3 server on the e-smith box from outside the LAN, we get an error message on the POP3 client as follows:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'mail.davis-lynch.com', Server: 'mail.davis-lynch.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

Is this due to a security issue or is something else wrong?

What measures can we put in place to allow checking of POP3 mailboxes from outside the LAN?

Appreciate your help.

I hope someone is able to answer this for you.  I have been looking into how to do this for weeks.  It would help me a great deal also.  Good luck.Ralph Dorr wrote:

I take it that you have enabled external POP access as shown in the manual?

http://www.e-smith.org/docs/manual/4.0/serverconfig.html#AEN1310

If so, you may find that some POP clients disconnect every so often,
and need a manual reconnect.

OK, Now I do feel braindead. I went to the site (45 minute drive) and sure enough, on the other email settings page of the e-smith-manager, there are settings for ISP mail server (the fix for relaying denied errors) and well and behold, there was a setting for POP3 and IMAP (public or private).

Once again, Thanks for a fine product.

If these are supported e-smith servers, you could contact our
support group via email or phone. Supported servers pay for further
e-smith development, so if you like it, why not register for support?

As a matter of fact, I am about to register this installation. The users are happy with it and I want to do my part to support you guys and the customer can afford it. Is there a webpage where a credit card can be taken and a registration number given. If not, it should be. It would be nice to give some added features for registration as well. You could enter the registration number into the e-smith-manager and it would enable the features. This would further entice some to register.

Thanks again and keep up the good work.
