Trying serveral 'free' isp's, I have a problem with webbrowsing through the e-smith box.
-dial-up works
-ifconfig shows ppp0 is up
-pinging ip numbers works
-pinging server names (e.g. www.e-smith.org) works
-ftp works
Browsing does not work. I tried both from an attached client workstation and using lynx from the console. Both fail.
Traceroute doesn't find a route either.
I'm running v.4.1. The setup *does* work with other isp's.
Anyone?
(for dutch readers: I tried 'HetNet', 'Zonnet', and 'NokNok'. Please let me know if you have better experiences using these or other free isp's)

Don't fully understand your problem. Are you saing you can not browse the web with a free isp? Does the free isp provide a gateway address and a primary and secondary DNS server address?

dns server and gateway are provided through dhcp at login. From ipconfig (win2k):
PPP adapter HetNet:
Verbindingsspecifiek DNS-achtervoegsel:
description. . . . . . . . . . . . .: WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface
physical adress . . . . . . . . . . . . : 00-53-45-00-00-00
DHCP-ingeschakeld . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP-adres . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .: 213.75.91.166
Subnetmask . . . . . . . . . . . . . .: 255.255.255.255
default gateway. . . . . . . . . . .: 213.75.91.166
DNS-servers . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 195.121.1.34
195.121.1.66
NetBIOS over TCPIP. . . . . . . . : Off
ifconfig on e-smith returns the following values for ppp0:
ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
inet addr:213.75.88.82 P-t-P:193.172.249.54 Mask:255.255.255.255
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:21 errors:1 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:1
TX packets:22 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:10
As ftp, ping and dns namelookup wors, my guess is that e-smith does get the proper dns server and defaultgateway settings.
But no webbrowsing......

Hello Pieter,
are you trying to browse from the e-smith server itself or from a machine behand the e-smith?
if you logon to the e-smith server using telnet or ssh you can start "lynx" at the command prompt, this is a text based webbrowser. Chech if this works. If it does, the problem lies with your windows browser (try installing your browser again, or install another one and test again.)
I have been using both Zonnet and Wish (noknok) with no problems at all.
good luck,
Niels
