Title: Restore woes
Post by: Des Dougan on March 19, 2001, 08:46:57 AM
The server I'm working on is a new Dell PowerEdge 300. When I first installed e-smith, it blew away the diagnostic partition Dell supplies with the system. This evening, I tried to re-institute it, but found that it blew away LILO. I also had a problem with mounting the root fs, after messing around with Partition Magic. So, I decided to rebuild and restore from the nice shiny new backup I took today. I installed from CD OK (4.1) and followed Darrell May's restore tips. However, the restore hung up the system, and on rebooting, the start up fails with "init: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libc.so.6: file too short". I get the same error when booting from the emergency disk.

As the Dell is SMP-capable, I applied the SMP RPMs and these are part of the restore, but I did not re-apply them before trying the restore (as they're on the tape, right??).

So, where do I go from here??

Des, since it sounds like you have changed partition entries,a full command line restore is not the correct thing to do.  I hope this is not what you attempted.

I'd suggest you perform another fresh install then restore from the e-smith manager interface only.  If you need to restore customizations you have done either reapply the appropriate RPM's or perform a 'very' selective command line restore.

Darrell

Following Darrell's message, I have done a fresh install. I then attempted the restore from the e-smith manager (restore from tape option). This ran for all of 13 seconds (I tried twice, with the same result) but didn't make any changes - in fact it didn't seem to read the tape. I have checked the tape, which is fine and have used the commandline options to restore the user data, ibays, password and group files (including shadow and smb files). I have re-applied the 4.1 upgrades. I have run the post-upgrade event and rebooted the server, having updated time zone, LDAP settings and NTP server via the web interface.

The only problems I now seem to have are that in the web manager, I can't see users, groups or i-bays - I'm told there are none, and when logging in, I can't connect to the 2 i-bays I restored.

I am assuming I have missed a step, but I have no idea what that might be. Any and all help appreciated.

Title: Fresh Install
Post by: stancol on November 03, 2004, 04:23:30 PM
I'm getting the same error "Kernal Panic init: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libc.so.6: file too short" on a fresh install of 6.0.1. I did add several Contribs to the fresh install but nothing I haven't installed before. The server runs for 24-48 hours before it stalls around midnight. Then I'm forced to do a hard reboot and the error comes up. At first I thought it was my older hard drives because I was getting errors showing from an e2fsck check. After replacing the two hard drives in the server (RAID Mirror) with two new Maxtor 80G drives. I reinstalled everything from scratch only to get the error again. This time I've made a copy of the /lib/libc.so.6 file so I can replace it if I get the error again. Hope that I don't get the error but if I do it looks like I can fix it.
