Title: Domain DNS howto.
Post by: Jean-Guy on March 28, 2001, 06:33:51 PM
Hi, I installed a 4.1 e-smtih server. it works great I registered a domain lets say(www.widget.com). I pointed ns1.widget.com to my IP address of the e-smith box and ns2 to my work pc. I can ping ns1 and ns2.widget.com but I cannot go www.widget.com and get the webpage. It seems like e-smith is not resolving the external DNS lookups. This is working from inside the lan but not from a extern machine.
Do I need a DNS service? Can e-smith resolve external DNS lookups?

Why on earth would you point ns2.widget to your work PC?  I can understand why you might think the e-smith box would serve DNS for external domains (though it doesn't), but the PC at work?

In any case, yes, you need DNS service.  You can get it for free at www.zoneedit.com or soa.granitecanyon.com; the former is easier to use, while the latter will allow you to handle any number of domains.  E-smith isn't set up to do external DNS for security reasons.
