Title: e-smith jukebox streaming MP3's
Post by: m alden on April 15, 2001, 03:28:56 AM
Ok, I realize that this question has been posted before.  But, I read through all of the post and have tried all that has been suggested, and I still cannot get my e-smith jukebox to stream MP3's to a workstation.

Here is what I have:  an e-smith server acting as gateway, mail, DNS-caching, web, etc.  Another e-smith box (in server mode only) that has become the dedicated internal MP3 box.  That box has an ibay named 'mp3' and has the mp3's in it, as well as designating that ibay with the jukebox setting from the admin page.  So, when that ibay is called up, you get the nice little page with all of the mp3's.

Then, I have one Win2k Server box that is handling log-in, DNS (internally), print server and file storage.  Plus, a handful of Win2k workstations and one 98SE box.  The jukebox server is called 'jukebox' and is on the 192.168.0.6 ip.  I set up a hostname for that box on my gateway server based upon the MAC address and dedicated that IP to that box based upon the name 'jukebox.'

So, when I am on any internal workstation, I can type 'jukebox\mp3 and instantly get the page that the jukebox software gives out (showing all of the mp3's that I put on that box).  I am able to click on the song I want and play it locally fine.  But every time I go to stream it, I get the same fault as everyone else ("unable to find file").

I tired editing the c:\windows\host file with "192.168.0.6   http:\jukebox.net"  and "192.168.0.6   jukebox.net"  plus a few other variations.

That made no difference.

Any ideas?

Michael

I have an idea of what's happening, but not how to fix it.  When you stream a file, the server sends a .m3u file, which is a playlist.  That file contains a reference back to whatever the server thinks its name is.  If that doesn't match what you've entered in your hosts file (which isn't likely, in this case), the name lookup will fail, and you won't be able to stream the file.

I had that problem but editing my hosts file did the trick ...
I set up a line for both combinations just to be safe, i.e.
192.168.1.10     www.foobar.net
192.168.1.10     foobar.net

I think WinAMP wanted to prepend a www to my e-smith's server
name of foobar.net, and that's how it assembled the URL from
which it streamed.  Mine works fine now.

Well, could not seem to make it all work, so I tried out this www.turnstyle.com/andromeda  jukebox on my server install of e-smith and it works great and has a really nice interface.

Just thought I would put this out there in case anyone is having the same problems as me.

Thanks for the help!
