Title: ETRN mail retrieval problem
Post by: Peter Clinch on April 27, 2001, 10:34:24 AM
We have an ISP hosted domain with mail queueing & permanent IP address on a dial up connection.  ISP supports ETRN.
Our e-smith domain name is our registered domain name as hosted by ISP.  Have modified www entry in hostnames to point to hosted domain at ISP.  All other hostnames have IP address 10.0.0.60 on our local NT network.

I can connect to internet, send and receive local mail and send external mail.  Can download mail from a pop box using multi drop, but cannot retrieve domain mail queued at ISP, using either ETRN or multi drop.

ISP has told me to use IP address of our hosted domain as secondary mail server, and that the MX record for our domain points to our permanent IP address, and has confirmed that there are messages queued for retrieval.

Have searched the board, and, while others seem to have had similar problems, the suggested fixes either do not apply or don't seem to work.

I would be grateful for any ideas.
Thanks,
Peter.

After doing a few pings from home, it appears that I may have been given an incorrect IP address by help desk at ISP.  Will go in tomorrow (Sunday) and try again.  Will advise

The problem is involved with IP addressing.  The ISP does not assign our static IP address to us when we connect.

Does anyone know if a static IP address can be configured in e-smith for a dial up connection?  The configuration procedure gives this option for a permanent connection, but not for a dial up connection.

Thanks

Peter.

The answer is that the ISP forgot to change the MX record when we changed to a permanent IP address.  I worked this out by doing some ns lookups, and advised the ISP about the discrepancy today.  We should be able to retrieve mail tomorrow.

It seems that it may be possible to configure a static IP address in e-smith for dialup by first configuring for a dedicated connection using the static address, then changing the configuration to dial up.  The static address seems to stay configured after the change.
