Title: PPTP data Encryption?

Does PPTP encrypt the data being sent or only the authentication process? If so, does the speed of the server (CPU) affect data throughput if only using one VPN connection?

I don't believe that it does, it only encrypts the username and password. From my test if I select "require data encryption" in the client setup I get the following error message:
The computer you're dialing in to does not support the data encryption requirements specified.
Please check your encryption settings in the properties of the connection.  If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.
So if you try to use data encryption your connection will fail.

If the data is not encrypted, what would be an easy solution to protect the data going through the VPN?

No, that is not correct, it encrypts the username and password, and also
requires that the data stream is encrypted with 128 bit encryption.

This is most likely because you do not have 128 bit encryption capabilities installed.

Charlie,
I'm running ME with IE5.5 sp1 and all the available updates. Surely this would have the 128 bit encryption? Maybe not. I'll have to look into it.
