Title: intranet / internet is this possible
Post by: Megan on May 22, 2001, 12:37:04 AM
hi,

e-smith box 1:  connected to internet via isdn line with external ta.  it to provide proxy and userauthentication ( i know how to do all this so far).

this works with browsers set to proxy 192.168.1.1 (the local ip address of the server) port 3128. works fine.  they can only access internet with browsers set to 3128 and with valid username.

i want to have an intranet on a different e-smith machine too.

i want users to be able to access intranet machine (e-smith box 2) without having to log into proxy on machine 1.

so,
if box one has local ip address of 192.168.1.1 can the second box be set with an external address of 192.168.1.2 and then a local one of 192.168.2.2 (my lan would then be 192.168.2.xxx)
can the browsers be set to direct internet access so they look at intranet server without needing authentication but the box2 would forward any internet requests (non internal) to box 1 port 3128.

can this be done?
has anyone done it?
which setting would box 2 be:  server with internet access or server and gateway.

hope i've explained this ok.

thanks in advance.

Megan, instead of configurating your E-smith box two on a separate subnet and making it be a gateway between the two subnets to avoid proxy auth, why not just simply add the IP address of E-smith Box #2 to the proxy exclusion list in the web browser on the client machine?

Seems like that would accomplish what you are trying to do with the least amount of effort.

Thanks,
