I have just installed 4.1.2 onto a dual p3-450 server and am wondering what are the two kernals that are mentioned. One is called "esmith" the other is called "esmith-up".I have looked at lilo.conf and believe that one is for multi processor pc's. The "esmith-up" kernal loads but the other does not and comes back with a "kernal panic"
I am also using a Promise ata100 pci card to drive a raid setup.
any help greatly appreciated

The UP is for UniProcessor, and the other one is for a Dual Proc setup.
The kernel should not crash, I'm not sure why it's doing that for you.
Try to set MP to v 1.4 in the BIOS.

Hi Karl,

Further update. The error code is as follows, after the pc boots and registers the raid array the following is displayed.
"Bad md_map in ll_rw_block"
"EXT2-fs: unable to read superblock"
"isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=09:01, iso_blknum=16,block=32"
"Kernal panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 09:01"
I've tried playing around with the bios settings, mainly due to the fact that I'm using a Promise ata100 pci add on card and thought it might have somthing to do with plug-n-play or irq's, all to no avail. My next step is to reinsatll onto the standard onboard ide and see what happens. Thanks for your info at this stage,
Karl

Further info again.
The single processor kernal works fine with either the promise card or the onboard ide controller. But the dual-processor kernal fails to boot and will hang at various places during the config screen. It is a Tyan m/board with dual P3-450's.
Anybody have any ideas pls let me know.
Thanks karl
