We're attempting to build a gateway/server with e-smith at a school site that already uses a netware 3.12 server, though has no internet access.
Will this work? How difficult?

We have successfully setup a E-smith server at school running Netware 4.x. They only use it for proxy & DHCP (at this stage!).
The installation is easy, all you need to do is add TCP/IP to the w/stations. You will need to add client for MS networks if you plan to use Samba shares.
I don't recommend tryingto upgrade Netware 3.x to use TCP/IP - I am not sure if it can be done.
Are you looking to remove the Netware server??? What will be the use of the E-smith server????
Also remember any network overhaul requires a fair amount of planning - don't just jump right into it!!

Good comments Brandon. I'd also suggest that unless the Netware 3.12 server is still required for a specific Novell only reason, there may be no 'real' need to continue to use Novell. The e-smith server does a great job acting as a simple file/print server. Of course there may be 'politics' behind the decision to keep the Novell and add the e-smith server which is not worth messing with. Having said that, it is much easier administering one server then two. As for disaster recovery, the e-smith server is the clear winner when combined with a good tape backup system.
