Post by: Amilcar on December 11, 2000, 05:59:31 PM
Does anyone know if e-smith can be used as a router?  If so how would it be set up and can it router?

e-smith provides a transparent gateway through ip masquerading.
This setup separates "internal" traffic from "external" traffic, to
provide a connection between two networks.

The configuration allows services which are meant to be internal
to be attached only to the internal interface, and similarly for external
services.

A router is usually designed to pass traffic (optionally with traffic
filters) and does not seperate "internal" from "external". Changing
e-smith into a router would remove this important distinction. Yes,
you could do it, but it wouldn't be an e-smith gateway any more.

There are various mini routers available - for example the
Linux Router Project  - www.linuxrouter.org

I found Freesco http://www.freesco.org to have a very easy setup, fitting on a bootable floppy. It offers quite a good range of different router setups.

Have a try.

I have used the freesco router software a number of times in commercial applications.  It is easy to set up and require very basic hardware. An other product for router/firewalls is at http://www.zelow.no/floppyfw/

Both are very good for a router application.
