has anyone successfully installed bind 8.x on their e-smith server ?
I am wanting to host my own dns.

What's with all the DNS posts today?  Bind is installed on e-smith, but by default, it doesn't serve DNS to the outside world.  To host your own DNS, you need to have two separate servers (primary and secondary).  Why not just use free DNS service from www.zoneedit.com or soa.granitecanyon.com?

now after looking a zoneedit.com i think i will use them, but i would like to see e-smith have the ability to serve out dns in the future.

The topic of primary DNS has been covered many times before.

Try a search on "DNS" on the Advanced Forum (which is the correct place
to discuss modifications to the e-smith server). For example:
