could someone please help me.
I have been trying for two weeks to setup dial-in to a e-smith server. I have a cable modem connected to it and a external us robotics modem. I am tring to connect remotely to it but it doen't work.
I don't loaded the mgetty program and I tryed to follow
ftp://ftp.e-smith.org/pub/e-smith/contrib/StephenNoble/RPMS/noarch/readme-dialin-server.html
I am still a newbie and I cann't get it to work.
could someone please give me good instruction.
thanks in advance

The process is pretty straightforward on the 'howto'
What we need to resolve is just what you have done and what is happening.
1/ Have you downloaded the 'mgetty' rpm and the appropriate 'dialin' rpm?
2/ have you installed them as per the 'howto' rpm -Uhv etc...
3/ Having done that you then nead to go to the e-smith manager and configure / enable the dial in settings. You need to enable the dialin status, configure a dialin modem ( serial port and IP address ).

Sidney,
Are you using 4.1.2? Apparently it is only supported for ver 4.0 and it's not recommended using it under 4.1.2 (athough I think a few people have managed to get it going). I'm sure Stephen Noble was working on this one but I'm not too sure what's happening with it at the moment. Any luck with 4.1.2 Stephen?

rod,
thanks for responding. here is what I did so far.
I download mgetty-1.1.25-5.i386 and unzip it to an ibay
I tryed to type this command and it didn't install mgetty
"rpm -Uhv--nodeps mgetty-1.1.25-5.i386.rpm"
I type rpm -i mgetty-1.1.25-5.i386.rpm and it look like it installed ########
but when I type rpm -q mgetty-1.1.25-5.i386.rpm it said it is not installed. I also try to follow michael instruction but with out any success.
http://home.iprimus.com.au/michaelmaxwell/
michael site said to install e-smith-dialin-0.3-1.src.rpm and mgetty
and to edit dial.cf file for the phone numbers and userid that I would let connect but I am unclear about that step.
after all that need to test the com ports with this command
I forget the complete command, ttS=0 and tts=1
but I get no messages back just the prompt #
thanks

here are the other commands that I could remember that is on
http://home.iprimus.com.au/michaelmaxwell/Mgettyundere-smith.html
I edit the /ect/mgetty+sendfax/login.config
added command "/AutoPPP/--/usr/sbin/ppd auth -chap +pap login debug lock"
edit /ect/mgetty+sendfax/dialin.config
not sure what command to add here
to test com 1 with these commands
/sbin/mgetty ttyS0
it just hangs there for a minute and goes back to the prompt.
to test com 2
/sbin/mgetty ttyS1
it quickly goes back to the prompt.
any more suggestion ?
Thanks

Llyod,
You may want to have a look at the current 'Howto' The dialin now supports 4.1.2
I know, I made some of the last changes to it and trailed it.
Rod
Sidney,
I am not sure I understand exactly what you have done with the mgetty rpm.
You say that you 'unzipped it' You would normally download the rpm package and then install it.
I woul dsuggest that you download another copy of the package and try and install it again.
The other information that you supplied is redundant if you use the 'dialin' package from Steven Noble. It does all of the other configuration and setup automatically.
If you follow the howto as written it does work. There are no other steps or configuration file changes required.
If you have been following multiple sets of instructions I suspect that you now have a system in an unknown state. Short of doing a clean reinstall of e-smith I am not sure how you recover from that.
Someone else may be able to assist.

Rod,
Can you point me to the latest HOWTO the one I'm reading here: ftp://ftp.e-smith.org/pub/e-smith/contrib/StephenNoble/RPMS/noarch/readme-dialin-server.html says that
e-smith-dialin is based on charlie bradys ver 0.1-x
Charlie's version worked for e-smith version 3.x
My 0.2-x versions work for e-smith 4.0 and 4.01, installing on 4.1 and later causes problems with file permissions, don't do it !
I have a version that installs for 4.1.x, it works for one modem, it has features to allow callback and multiple modems but these are still in testing. Please report success for these features and the changes you need to make.
Why
This is taken from the list of user contributed HOWTO's
Thanks Lloyd

Hi Lloyd,
After a second look the HowTo is a bit vague, however if you read further down the the howto ( the URL you quoted is correct ) under the 'install' section you will see that there is a version 0.3-x which is for V4.1
That is actually the version for 4.1.x and is the package refered to in the history part of the HowTo that you quoted.
The 'HowTo' needs some updates, also the Howto index needs to reflect this, Ive sent an email to Stephen ( the author ) to let him know.
:)

I can get the modem to answer but I can not connect.
I am using a win98 mechine to try to connect with dial-up networking.
Should it connect with this program? or do I connect with some other program ?
I have to type /sbin/mgetty ttyS1 to set the modem to answer
and it will only answer one time untill I retype that command.
do you know how to get it to answer more then one time with out retyping those command each time ?
In the dial_config you can put the user name and phone number who you want to connect. do you put the account information or the user name information ?
like when you setup a new user there is a field that you enter acount "jsmith" and a user name field "john smith".
thanks for all your help

I think you really need to read the howto at
ftp://ftp.e-smith.org/pub/e-smith/contrib/StephenNoble/RPMS/noarch/readme-dialin-server.html
And follow the instructions.
The dialin RPM does all of the configuration that is required to get this to work.
There is no need to manually edit any of the files.
There is a new configuration option available on the e-smith manager that allows you to enter the small amount of actual configuration required.
I'm afraid I cannot help you with any manual configuration of the dialin, I have not done it. Only used the rpm which provides a very neat and tidy way of achieving a result.

Hi Rod
I have managed to install the latest version and it works to the point that I can dialup get authenticated and then send and recieve mail. How do I get acces to the ibays from a windows machine and / or use the proxy? Can I access the internal network as I would if I connected through the vpn option. I added "esmith 192.168.0.1" to my c:\windows\hosts file and can ping the box no problem using its name.
Should the dialup computer have the same workgroup name ?
Should I be able to see the computer's on the local net in network neighbourhood ?
Can I map a drive to an Ibay ?
Any help would be very welcome ?
Regards
Dean
