I've discovered that I can send to any user by their local name which is "USER@rn-computing.local" but anything sent to any *real* Internet address is not sent. Using an email client everything works great. Are there config files I can look at for IMP?

Generate a mail log file analysis from the e-smtih manager to show reasons for failure. It should give a clue to what is happening.
Depending on your situation, you may need to specify an smtp server for outgoing mail under Configuration...Other email settings in the manager.
