Can anyone tell me how i can control how much bandwidth a user has to the internet behind a e-smith server or if it cant be done?

You can use hardware that has bandwidth control feature, e.g. Merilus FireCard Plus. Its features includes hardware firewall and others useful tools. But the cost is quite expensive. Visit its web site at: http://www.merilus.com/products/fc/accounting.shtml

As the subject of using squid to limit bandwidth I found you can use delay pools for this. Have a look at:

This is a rather advanced topic, however, for which you would have to change or even add templates.

Looks for cbq & cbq.init on your e-smith. I manage bandwidth with this tools. Configuration examples on ftp://ftp.equinox.gu.net/pub/linux/cbq/cbq.init
