I looked at the SME info, and its requirements compaired to E-Smith 4.x seem to be quite high. Is this artificial, or real?
Also, I have not found anything that actually states the changes between E-Smith 4.1 and SME 5.0. Can this info be found anywhere?

The hardware requirements look quite reasonable to me. Given the market they are looking at, those specs may even be a little conservative. With the prices of hardware being what they are, I don't think it really matters. That's not to say you couldn't run the software on a P166 with 32meg RAM, but why would you want to?

Because I can purchase refurbished Compaq Deskpro 4000 systems with 96 MB RAM, 4 GB HD, CD-ROM, Ethernet NIC, SVGA, Sound, 15" monitor -- in other words, a 100% complete and capable system -- for $135, and that includes shipping and taxes. For a basic (home or small office) system that is more than adequate. And for the price, I can afford to have a complete system standing by as a spare.

Scott,
could you tell me where I could buy one of those

Search ebay for "compaq deskpro". You'll need to purchase in quantity (a half dozen or so) in order to get the price down. I use one for e-smith, gave one to my parents, put one in each of the kids rooms (that's three systems), and sold one to my brother-in-law. I just purchased four more -- one for me to play with, and three because of word of mouth. Those three I'll make a little profit on.

I happen to be running E-Smith for my home server, which is a PPro 180 with 128MB Ram. Yes, I can upgrade it to something else, but I don't want to. It may sound like I'm whining, but I am quite happy now, and would like to take the easy route to upgrade some of the componets in E-Smith.
I know, there are the How-To's, but that does not get me a known tested and working configuration, that will work with future upgrades.
I moved to E-smith from SuSE because of the ease of use, and would like to continue to use it for some time to come.
