Title: NTP Time Configuration
Post by: Gene Cooper on September 18, 2001, 11:33:27 PM
Hi all,

I just had an e-smith server get rebooted because the power went out and the UPS it was on didn't last long enough (yes, I'll get the shutdown software configured RSN...it was bad timing!).

The problem is that, after rebooting, it appears the server synchronized up with the NTP time server, but the time was off by *exactly* the 7 hour (US/Mountain) timezone difference from UTC.

I had to use the e-smith-manager interface to reset the time on the server and reset the time on all workstations.

Why?  What went wrong?

Should I set the e-smith server to UTC?  What is the best time policy/configuration using Linux/e-smith?  How does e-smith work in this regard?

TIA,

G

The hardware clock should probably be set to UTC.
