Title: no NetBios resolution on lan with ESSG 4.1.2

I have a small lan , 6 computers all using win98se and logging onto domain with ESSG 4.1.2. One of my pc's however is obtaining its ip, default gateway, dns server correctly from ESSG , it is not however obtaining any wins server info. It can see all other pc's on the network EXCEPT for ESSG. When I run winipcfg , I can renew the IP ok, but the tick box for "NetBIOS Resolution uses DNS" is not ticked , and I have no WINS server. All my other boxes have this ticked and there is the ip of ESSG in the WINS server field. What could be causing this , I have changed  NIC's in this machine twice and changed the cable. In the TCP/IP properties the option use DHCP for WINS is enabled and all other fields are the same as my other PC's . I have all latest updates for ESSG-4.1.2 installed.

Does anyone have any ideas?

this is just a long shot... but you might try uninstalling all protocols on that win machine that is having problems and then resintall tcp/ip and netBEUI.

I have already tried that as well as new cards, I did a fresh install on a new box and everything worked fine, this one machine however just wont recognise ESSG as the wins server. I dont want to format and reinstall as I have a ton of stuff on it, but i have tried re-installing over win98se and that still didnt help. I guess i am looking for something like resolve.conf (linux) for windows.... i dont know!

Hi,

I am not sure whether this is the solution for you coz you are wanting a /etc/resolv.conf equivalent on MS. I have a different problem but fixed with this approach.  My problem is the DHCP assigned WINS servers, somehow, refuse to add ES4.12 to the browser list.  So my ES is practically invisible in the LAN.

Under Win98, there is a file "Lmhosts.sam" under c:\windows.
Make a copy of this file and change the name to Lmhosts.  Then you hard code the server name and the IP address as needed.
