Title: Adaptec 2400A IDE Controller
Post by: Des Dougan on October 06, 2001, 11:21:12 AM
According to Adaptec's site, the 2400A IDE RAID controller is supported under Red Hat 7. Has anyone any experience with this card under 4.1.2 or 5.0? I'd appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks,

Hi Des,

I'm happy to say that I have tried the 2400A under ESSG 4.1.2. It was painless to install as well (although not automatic).

However, I did not try it as a boot controller, only as a RAID controller for the data drives (the server had a separate boot drive). None the less, it does work.

Kelvin,

Thanks for your reply. Do you know if it can be configured as the boot controller?

Des,

Theoretically, yes, I don't see why not. As I said previously, I personally have not tried it as the boot controller. You probably just need to make sure your MB BIOS has been setup correctly to boot from another source other than the on board controllers, plus you need to supply e-smith with the correct driver during installation in expert mode (something like that, I'm no guru at Linux :) ).

Des & Jerome,

You could try this :-

When booting the ESSG CD-ROM, at the initial screen, type

accept dd         ( dd stands for driver disk )

instead of just accept.

You will be prompted for a driver disk during install.

Let me know if this works OK.

As far as I can tell Adaptec have only released a binary version of their driver, and then not for the updated 7.0 kernel (2.2.19-7.0.8) which we have used in SME V5. UNfortunately, that means that we cannot support this controller.

Ask Adaptec to provide source code.
