Title: win2k workstations with SME5 server
Post by: darren on October 08, 2001, 10:00:31 AM
relativly new to SME5
have several machines on win2k and is it possible to use the domain of the server to login ie accounts setup on SME and access is auto granted to all win2k machines.tried just setting the networking from win2k but it can't seem to check if an account is there.

any ideas what where or how

Daren,
this topic is under active discussion in the
developmenet mailing list devinfo@lists.e-smith.org.
The short answer is that win2k support is experimental and incomplete
at the moment, though some developers have release test rpms
which include an update of samba to allow it.
This is definitely something that is being worked on though so
when the bugs are ironed out I anticipate Mitel will release
a blade update.  If you want to try out the rpms and join in
on the development testing please subscribe to devinfo.

It should be stressed that these rpms are for testing and
development purposes only and are not final nor are they necessarily
fully functional.

Darren,
We have a mixed mac/win2k/winxp network. We have less than 15 machines in the office and I did look into the whole samba/win2k domain issue and in the end realised that I really didn't need a domain at all. The network works just fine on a workgroup, and as long as each user logs onto their win2k/winxp machine with the same log/pass as their account on the SME5 box everything works a treat.

All the best,

Julian

Did this work for WINXP clients? I have setup a Workgroup environment as I had with Win98SE .. use the same logon/pass on the PC as with the SME server and it doesn't have the access of the SME user I have setup ...
