Title: E-Commerce Servers....
Post by: Michael on October 08, 2001, 10:19:43 AM
Hi all,

I have been investigating using SME5 instead of NT as an alternative server for hosting multiple websites.

Does the email server support multiple domains?
Does the Apache version support multiple domains?
Can I host my own DNS on the server? And if 'yes', is this multiple domains support and where is that covered?

Can I set the Webmail up for the different domains through the one site?

Anything other information you may find relevant, please forward to me.

Cheers,
Michael

Yes, with certain limitations... out of the box, SME handles multiple domains as follows...

Mail to user@domain1, user@domain2 [...] goes to the account "user".  There is no built in support for mail sent to the same user name on different domains to be sent to different local accounts.

I believe there is a contributed HOWTO that explains how to work around this limitation.

Yes.  Out of the box, Apache supports multiple virtual domains.  This *requires* browsers accessing any domain other than the default to use HTTP 1.1, and also rules out secure HTTP to any of the "secondary" domains.  An attempt to access a web site via IP address yeilds the default site.

I've heard that this has been done, but Mitel explicitly discourages this.  Search the forums for more information.

Yes...  This is the default behaviour.  (in fact AFAIK it can't be done any other way)

Secure HTTP works fine, as the SSL version is another section from another expanded template

I had to use SSL for most of my work for a while, as ISPs stopped port 80 for CodeRed & Sircam reasons...
