Title: pppoe

I'm looking for a little help connecting to a residential DSL service. . .

I am using pppoe with my dsl username and password, and i don't know any of the other settings . . .for some reason it assigns me a static ip address . . .but pppoe is for dynamic applications right?

am I supposed to have dhcp enabled or disabled?

what are the settings supposed to look like?

Here are my settings.  

 keep  Keep the current setting: "Server and gateway".

  keep  Keep the current setting: "server and gateway - dedicated".
 

 External Interface Configuration ?
  keep  Keep the current setting (PPPoE)
 

Select dynamic DNS service ?
 I use commercial www.dyndns.
  keep  Keep the current setting of "dyndns"
DHCP  is used only to assign i/p addresses to pc's without them.
 I'm 99% sure it is not needed.

 Select master DNS server address
   Mine is blank



Select proxy server
  keep  Keep the current setting: "No"                    ?
 

 I think you need dyndns  for others to reach you.

Also readup on  dynamic dns..... If you are only going from your pc;s to the outside world then I don't think it matters what your i/p is.  If you want to access your computers from offsite via the web then you need to know the current i/p address.  dyndns and others keep track of it....

 As far as static or fixed i./p in the setting, i remember seeing that a few times... With pppoe running I'm pretty sure it was set to 'fixed' , which seems confusing but works.

how do ppl know my extra IP if my IP is dynamic? how does dyndns help?

pppoe means Point to Point over Ethernet.
you could have a pppoe connection with a static ip address.

when sme (or e-smith on 4.1.2) ask if you want to enable dhcp, it is used in you LAN... For the computer connected to your box. Nothing to have with Internet.

Actually this is a bad question :)
I tried to use my DSL connection on windows with no success.
I connected my modem to e-smith.. I launched the config process and typed in my username and password and everything went fine.
So I couldnt tell you what the settings should look like since we dont have the same username/password :)

What's exactly the problem ?
you tried to get connected and it didnt work or are you thinking to take a dsl connection ?

Basically, your server updates your ip address on dyndns when you get connected.
You need to register (for free) on www.dyndns.org and then create a dynamic ip account.
Then in your box configuration just give the domain XXX.dyndns.org and then username/password and e-smith will update your ip your ya.. great huh ?

It took me a few times reading thru the info on dyndns to get the concepts.

 I'm away from my office and links to info are there.

 Maybe someone else could point you to info on dynamic dns .
