I am using e-smith as a gateway for a cable modem and I am having trouble getting my client computers to connect to my isp's news server. I can ping the address of the news server without a problem but when I try to connect using a news reader it cannot find the server. I don't know if this is a problem with port 119 or if there is something else that i'm missing. Any ideas??

need more info about your setup, from a web browser if you type www on your client machine and hit enter do you get your e-smith manager home page or your isp's home page?
-
Neither, I get my website homepage. The index page in the primary ibay. I think it has something to do with the firewall blocking port 119. I can ping the address and if I hook up the cable modem directly to a client everything works.

SME Server does not block any outgoing ports. What is the
hostname of the news server? Can you telnet to it from the
commandline of the SME Server:
telnet news.tofu-dog.com nntp
[server greeting]
QUIT

I am suffering from a similar problem. I have E-Smith installed as a gateway between my Win98 PC and my internet cable connection with Shaw.
When I try to connect to Shaw's (cable provider) email server, my computer cannot resolve the DNS address of the email server. When I type "www" into my browser I go to the homepage of my E-Smith server.

I am having similar problems with Cogeco. When I use the telnet command suggested by Rich, the response is : .... xx.xxx.xxx.xxx: No route to host
When I type: "www" I also end up at the "Welcome to XYZ Corp..."
My server is set up as servergateway-private.
Everything else seems to run well.
Any pointers would be appreciated
Cheers!

I am having this same problem, I had solved it before (prior to e-smith) when I had a cable modem and a server a few years ago.
The name of the news server for cable modem service I have is just "news" In my news client I put the name news and the port 119 and when I check for newsgroups the client reports that I it is unable to locate the news server.
