Title: DNS for DIALUP Account
Post by: Jelke van der Meer on November 05, 2001, 12:47:36 AM
Hi,

I use e-smith 5.0 as a file- and printserver and also want to use it as a gateway to the internet. In my ISP account I must fill in the DNS address of my server provider, otherwise I will get a connection but can not surf the internet. Also can not get email. Where do I put the DNS information in e-smith to satesfy my ISP?

Wat I want is just simply use e-smith to share my internet account on the local LAN.

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks.....

Jelke

I think you have to enter an external DNS at configuartion time. Login as admin with password and review the settings.

Hope it helps,

I did do that already.. But during configuration I can only input something of a external proxy, no DNS information.
I put the DNS of my ISP in the external proxy field, but no results.
I can make a connection to the internet, I can even surf www.microsoft.com and also www.qnx.com..... But all the other sites give something like: xxxxxxxxx.com found, waiting for reply......
And from there nothing happens....
If I go to www.microsoft.com than I get connected but slower than normal. This is also the case with www.qnx.com.

I only want to use my e-smith to share internet connection. NOT to publish a website.. Any help would be appriciated..

Thanks!

If you can find other site (xxx.com found, waiting for reply...) means that your DNS works well. Probably your proxy settings. Leave the external proxy empty and try again..

Thanks for your advise, but I already did that. Why do I think it has something to do with DNS server of my ISP?
In my RedHat 7.1 linux box leaving out the primary and secondary DNS info wich my ISP uses I have the same problem. Inserting just the DNS information and everything works fine.

I also did the same thing on my Windows 98 machine. I made a new dialup connection to my ISP provider with IP settings on automatic. I found the same problem. Filling in de primary and secondary DNS IP in my dialup account, and BINGO.....

So, what I simply need to do is to say to my e-smith server that I want to use the primary (and/or) secondary DNS of my ISP. I'm sure that everything will work fine then....

It would be of great help if anybody could tell me were I put those DNS information into e-smith.

B.T.W: The DNS info I have to use is: Primary 195.121.1.34 and secondary 195.121.1.66

Thanks for yor help.

First, reread HF Wang's contribution on this! He's right.

(although ifconfig /a will only work on a NT/2000 box, when using Win9x you should/could use winipcfg to release/request dhcp-leases)

1) In version 4.1.2 or later of the essg, configure the server (from the console) as server and gateway, type dialup. You will be asked which nameserver to forward request to. Use 195.121.1.34 there.
2) Also, consider use dhcp to auto-configure your clients.
3) Try a "nslookup www.planet.nl" when logged in as root, again when logged in at the console; if that works, and your client doesn't, reconfigure your clients to use the essg as dns-server (shouldn't be necessary when using essg's dhcp features).

Really, retry this, all works well with essg and Planet Internet :)

 Good luck, Bart

Hi Bart,

Thanks for reply. This is what I realy need! But, the trouble is when I configure from the essg console and choose dialup gateway, I don't get asked for any external nameserver to send requests to!!!! I only can input my modem port, modem init string, dialup number, account name and password etc.

But there's NOWHERE a question about external DNS servers to forward requests to..... That would solve my problem...

I use DHCP on my essg already and this works fine on my clients.
(Dialup gets even activated when my clients request so.....!!

I believe that I do something wrong, but I dont no where or what..
Everything works fine on my essg except this DNS problem...

I will read H.F. Wang's contribution, maybe this will clear things up..

Do you have some idea what goes wrong with my configuration??

Thanks for your time and replies...

Did you fill in the DNS entries in your client-box? (TCP/IP properties).

Yes. I tried that also. No positive results...!!

There should be a prompt for an external DNS server during the configuration.  I think it is the only thing in the config that isn't remembered from a previous run, though.  You must re-type it every time instead of hitting enter to keep the previous value.  However, unless your ISP is actively firewalling your  DNS queries to the root and authoritative servers you should not need to use their forwarder.

Jelke,

Can you 'ping' any address for testing purposus instead of 'surfing'?

Hi.

Thanks for all the responces so far. I have tried everything you all proposed to do or try. And Yes I found the setting wich I need to fill in during every config session.
I can ping everything on the internet and get responces.

Next I will turn off the DHCP Server on e-smith and try everything with static ip information. I will let you all now if this will work. It seems to me that DHCP overrules any other setting, thats why I want to try static...

Thanks again,

Jelke

Hi all,

I'v tried everything with static IP but results remain the same.
So, I will try to find some other ISP provider, wich will work with my essg server.

If anybody has some better ideas, I'm still interested...

Can you ping an external IP address?

How about by domain name?

How about a tracert?

I would try these things, to determine if you are having problems with the connection to the net, resolution of names, proxy errors, or client machine issues.

Try the above from the e-Smith and from a client machine on your LAN.

My Provider is Planet Internet (www.planet.nl)

Yes, as we discussed before, I can ping external IP.

Using my Windows 2000 Pro's shared internet connection all clients (configured by DHCP) work fine.......

So, I'm sure that e-smith causes the problem...
I installed e-smith on several PC's and allways run in to the same problem......
And Yes, I'v tried smoothwall, its a piece of cake.... But I need file and printer sharing on the same machine....

I have been experimenting with my RedHat Linux Box. This box has a internal EICON Diva PCI card for ISDN. Configuring this RH box with DHCP I have the same problem as with my ES-box.

By editing /etc/resolv.conf I can make things work right.

I add the following lines to resolv.conf:

search planet.nl
nameserver 195.121.1.34
nameserver 195.121.1.66

This works on my RedHat Box..

I have tried the same on my ESSG-box, but it does not seem to work!!!
