Hey e-smithers! Anyone know if it's possible yet to authenticate users to relay mail via the e-smith server from the internet? I have a couple 'o laptop users who I would like them to send mail from the server when out and about.... cheers.

Hi baronne,
The Safe way would be creating profiles on your mail clients for your laptops.
1 - Road Profile: pop.yourdomain.zzz & smtp.yourISP.com
2 - Office profile: pop.yourdomain.zzz & smtp.yourdomain.zzz.
If your laptop are running windoz mail client like outlook you can use the two profiles with the on the same "pst" file.
It a safe way that we use in our company with laptops on the road.
ciao.

Another way is to enable Secure SMTP (SSMTP) via the howto's. When doing this the connection appears to come from the localhost (127.0.0.1) so e-smith allows you to send out e-mail. This is secure as it requires that you authenticate using a valid user on the box and also encrypts the data.
The only drawback that I have found is some versions of mailclients complain about the certificate not being signed correctly. I haven't found a way around this yet. Other than that it allow me to send email from anywhere.
