Hi, peoples
I'm investigating for more than 6 monts on e-smith 4.xx and SME 5.x on the subject of backup and restore. But doing a tape backup and after doing a restore, the mail stop to do the retrival on the exsternal ISP, (multidrop option on the e-smith manager).
Also users are not recovered from backup, when a fresh install has been made after the tape backup.
The backup to desktop presents the same problems.
Last tape backup and restore I've done, with a new HP Surestore DAT8 and the proper procedure of SME v.5, produced a stop in the downloading function of fetchmail.
To obtain a true backup I actually utilize multiple (3) HD and I do a copy af the "working disk" by means of PowerQuest PQDI or by Paragon.
To copy the HD the e-smith server must be off-line and the operation needs (depending on disk data size) from 5 to 30 minuts.
The copy is done each day and I maintain 2 different copies on 2 HD.
May be the and the copy. The disks are inserted in drawers to obtain an easy swapping. Handling of a drawer is quite delicate and HD's must handled with certains cautions.
After this long introduction I arrive to the point: what features are provided in aXon 1.0 (and for the future), in order to have a true working mechanism of BACKUP and RESTORE.
A true server is useless without serious methods of installation saving and, also, of data save and recovery.
Has anyone deeply investigated the subject?

For e-smith and SME you need to use the "reinstallation disk" that is created through the e-smith-manager.
You boot from this floppy disk with the install CD in the CD drive on a fresh machine. This installs e-smith or SME with all of the configuration information from the machine in which the floppy was created. *Then* you do a restore of the data from your tape.

We frequently use and test both network and tape backup and restore.
When combined with the reinstallation floppy mentioned in the other followup, both methods fully restore a server to its pre-backup configuration, including all users and settings.
Neither will restore non-standard customisations, but both will restore all configuration and data from server customised as described under www.e-smith.org/custom.
If you have a problem with the backup and restore, please

If you believe you have found a bug, please provide a detailed
bug report to bugs@e-smith.com Please note that we do not provide technical support through the bugs@e-smith.com alias, but detailed bug reports may help fix problems in a later release.
