Hello all, hoping you can help.
I have checked the how-to, and FAQs but they don't seem to answer this for me.
I have an E-Smith server with a cable internet connection.
It shares the internet connection for LAN users as it is meant to.
However, I wish to provide internet access for a friend through a 56kbs dial-in modem as well. I do not want to give him admin access ect, as in a remote admin setup!
Merely give him a user account and make the E-Smith box receive his dial in call providing him with net access.
How would I go about this?
Has anyone done this on a user, not admin level?
Thank-you for any and all help,
Regards,
Darren
P.S. we currently have a Win2k server on the LAN providing the dial-in access. But this setup is a stop gap measure and is an overkill.

Hi!
I tried this several months ago, and i used this HOWTO & RPM by Stephen Noble.

I Hope this helps,
Rob.

Thanks Robert, I did read that one though before I posted.
It doesn't allow for any security though.
I was looking for something which allows only people with user accounts to have access.
Did you have any thoughts to share from the experience from a few months ago. Pros - Cons?

Darren

Hi,
I only used this for my own access to my own server, I wouldn't try this on a REAL server, although you could try contacting Stephen Noble for help, stephen@dungog.net
Sorry I can't help you more,
Rob.

>If you can shed some light on the subject
i first built dialin rpm's for a 3.1 then 4.0 server
it worked for me at the time and i haven't needed them since
i built a rpm for 4.1.x and later servers as a base for others to improve on but no one gave any constructive feedback so i shelved the effort.
i'm sure others are using dialin but they are keeping quiet about it.

Well, I'm not sure what others did, but in my case I had to resort back to an old WebRamp device for dial-in. I used your RPM up until I needed to upgrade to SMEv5, and it caused me to punt back to the old hardware closet. I would like to see an updated version, but lack the expertise to help modify.
So I offer moral support to anybody that wants to continue this project...

I guess that Stephen's RPM (still) provides a good basis.
I used Stephen's templates and enhanced it to provide a dial-in for Windows-based boxes (use ppp for dialin to gain samba-network-access), and improved the security.
However, this also was a one-time needed effort (on a v4.0 of e-smith), and it's even not on my shelf anymore (sorry).
But ofcourse I can remember how I did it: used mgetty for pppd-dialin, and config pppd more securely (based on what I know about configuring pptpd and samba; do not forget to *dis*allow shell-access when using mgetty - otherwise your box will be wide open!). Oh, YMMV.
Good luck,
Bart

Any chances of a rebuild and howto for the dumb folk. :)
