Title: Problems receiving some emails
Post by: Erik on January 09, 2002, 07:14:04 PM
This has been stumping me for a couple of days:

Every so often, people who send an email to a user on My e-smith server receive the following error;

------------------
This Message was undeliverable due to the following reason:

Your message was not delivered because the destination computer was
not reachable within the allowed queue period.  The amount of time
a message is queued before it is returned depends on local configura-
tion parameters.
---------------

I suspect there are too many messages in queue  for receipt and some of them eventually time out. Upon experimenting, I discovered that smaller messages, ie. messages with a subject of something like 'testing the account' and a body of a few words, went through fine. But the email disappears into cyberspace as soon as the email becomes a paragraph or two in length. It does not even show up on my logs as a failed message. I have no record of it. Is there a way to increase the queue period to a greater amount to let these emails sit tight until they are tended to. I am pushing a lot through a small amount of bandwidth.

NOTE: this is not a problem with attachments, they come through OK if the message text meets the above parameters.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as users are losing vital email.

Thanks,
Erik

To add to the above question,

It seems as though no emails above a few k in size get delivered. They don't even show up in the logs. (these are emails sent both from the e-smith users and outside senders).

Any thoughts?
