Title: Email collection not working in SME5.1.2
Post by: Robert Field on February 02, 2002, 07:44:13 PM
The same problem that occurred when SME 5.0 was released has shown its head again with SME5.1.2.

You can not collect email with dial on demand.  I' have now tried it on three boxes all DoD and they all have the same problem.

last time it was the non inclusion of POP in the listing if i remember.  It was fixed with release of blade update2.

Just checked old forum listings.

SME5 excluded POP3 from /etc/services but it appears to be there this time.

etc/fetchmail  collects mail.

Is it worth adding a custom template or will there be Blade to fix this as with SME5

Does or doesn't collect mail? I assume that if it does collect mail then you don't have a problem.

As far as we know there isn't a problem. If we don't know there is a problem, we can't fix it. Why don't you send a detailed bug report to bugs@e-smith.com and we can work out whether there really is a problem or not?

Charlie

I do have a problem and duplicated on two machines, one an upgrade and one a fresh install.

I will send a bug report as suggested.  I'm not that conversant with Linux and with the fear of wasting your time and feeling stupid, It felt better to voice problems within the general group.

Sorry if this was wrong.  Could you please advise what log file I should include in the report.

Thanks

Just a thought

I have been collecting email manually by typing /etc/fetchmail since installing SME5.1.2 as explained in earlier posts, each time I was already connected to my ISP.

Tonight I manually collected as usual but this time was not already connected.

Error message as shown.
fetchmail: couldn't find canonical DNS name of in.talk21.com

I waited for the line to connect typed etc/fetchmail again and successfully collected email.

I continued to work online leaving Outlook open in the background and received more mail whist still on line.

Could the problem with email collection be a timeout issue, with fetchmail not allowing enough time to connect before giving up?

Is this possible? Would appreciate any comments.
