Post by: Boris on February 05, 2002, 09:22:09 AM
Have anybody tried to install/upgrade samba on SME 5.x to this version yet?
I need some way to authenticate users agains existing NT domain for file sharing.
Thx.

SMEv5.1.2 does this out of the box for Windows 95/98/SE/ME/2k and with minor registry patches for Windows XP.

Rob
I dont think he wants to use his sme as the domain controller i think he is looking to use it as a BDC which apparently samba2.2.3 is now capable of doing

I may be wrong though !

I think this would be a great feature since immeadiately you eliminate one nt/w2k box from the network it would also make managing password much easier.

just my 2c worth

Actually, the release notes for Samba 2.2.3 say that Samba can now act as a Backup Domain Controller to a *Samba* Primary Domain Controller.  Big difference from acting as a BDC to a Win NT PDC.

Thank you for replies. I want to clarify my intention. I would like to keep NT (PDC and BDCs) in place and add Samba server as an additional BDC or “Member server”. I would use it as a file storage only, but keep users/groups on existing NT domain.
