Hi all,
can someone help me with this?
I have SME 5.0 on one machine and
Windows 2000 Pro on another.
Until yesterday everything worked fine.
In the Network Neighbourhood I could
alsways see the SME machine and the
ibays i set up.
Well ... yesterday I had to do a fresh
install of the Windows 2000 Computer.
Now I am able to ping the SME Server
and Internet access works like usual,
but I don't see the machine in the
Network Neighbourhood any more.
Also the browsing of the Neighbourhood
is terribly slow.
I can't remember if I had configured
something special on the Windows
machine.
Can you help me with the necessary
steps to get this working again?
Thank you.

Hi,
1. Are they in the same named workgroup?
2. Windows takes a while before it can 'see' others.
Maybe it helps,

Hello RequestedDeletion,
> 1. Are they in the same named workgroup?
Yes they are.
I didn't change the SME settings.
After freshly installing the Windows machine
I set the identification (workgroup) to what it was.
There is another computer in that workgroup and
this one is visible.

What do you mean with this?
Some seconds or some days?
I know that if you select the network neigbourhood
it takes some 1-2 seconds until it builds the tree,
but since yesterday it takes 10-20 seconds. During
this time of waiting the whole Computer is blocked.
I also tried to "search" for the computer by its name
and by IP - both methods failed.
Also I checked "net view \sme" and
"net view \192.168.101.1" but it didn't work as well.
The logs of samba seem OK.
I rebooted the server and samba anounced, that it
was successful in becoming the domain master and
local master, etc.
I'm quite helpless now.
In any case I plan to update to 5.1 although I'm a
bit anxious because I can't backup at the moment.
Maybe it helps, but I still don't understand why it
doesn't work now.

Hi,
Is samba started on the SME machine?
/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb status
Did you examine /etc/smb.conf just to see if all settings are right?

Hi,

Yes.

No - I just checked the ibay-settings in the servermanager.
Since I didn't change anything on the server - only reinstalled
the windows machine it sould work. Except it changes itself :)
I don't have access to my network from here so I'm unable
to look at the configs now, but I'll do this in the next few days
and post my - hopefully successful - answer here then.

I don't think you have permissions anymore.
Using Explorer, map a share (\sme\primary or \sme\) with a valid *SME* username and password.
Now try a "net view \sme" and you should see shares.

Hi,
I think you should at least see it, and need a valid account o access it or ?

Hi,
the permissions weren't the problem.
(If you don't have permissions on the computer
you still can see it - at least by searching for its name).
I feel quite awful about it, but it was completely my fault.
I have a software NAT router running on one of the
Windows machines to get my wireless lan connected.
This router filters out all the NetBIOS stuff by default
which I didn't see. As an excuse I have to say it was
a very hidden checkbox with which I could turn it on
again. After that everything went fine again and
browsing the network neighbourhood is extremely
fast again.
Since the router was running on another machine
I couldn't imagine that it could have an effect on the
traffic between the SME and my computer.
That was really suprising to me.
So I'm realy sorry for all the unnecessary confusion
I caused.
Best regards,

My shares were working now there lost!
I have no idea what to look for in /etc/smb.conf but something has gone wrong with "my shares". I usually mapped to my e-smith 4.1.2 box via
\1.2.3.4\ibayname and ticked the connect on login ie on my Win98 box. This worked fine for ages then its gone. No changes ... nothing.
Now I cannot get the ibay at all (for over a week now)
The following may help.
1. samba seems to be running OK on the e-smith box(see following)
[root@dhs /root]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb status
smbd (pid 1266) is running...
nmbd (pid 1280 1277) is running...
2. I have a group called managers which I (sam) am a user
The ibay called "staff" has group:managers write=group, read=group and Entire Internet(password required outside local network) and php,cgi enabled.
None of this has changed. It has been working fine.
3. I log onto windows as sam and the connection cannot find \1.2.3.4\staff saying "the network name cannot be found". Pinging 1.2.3.4 gives replies.
Any help would be appreciated.
