Title: Restore From Desktop problems
Post by: Andy Parkinson on February 16, 2002, 09:12:53 PM
I recently posted that I was having problems with my browser timing out when trying to restore a backup and had  some helpfull replies to this although none of them solved my problem. The reason I am posting again is that after some experimentation I have discovered some things that I think may be relevant to this problem When I try and do a verify from desktop it only times out if the file I am trying to verify is above  2 gig. I am wondering if this is something to do with the 2 gig file limit that linux has and if so is there a way that we can fragment the backup to prevent this problem. The strange thing is that this limit does not seem to be relevant when doing the backup only the restore. I am trying to restore on a win 2k proffesional system  sp2 with ie6. Has anybody else found that the problem appears to be file size. My problem is that my SME box has an 80 gig drive in it and no tape drive so 2 gig is far too small.

Yes, it is related to the 2 GB limit. I reported it to the bugs list a coupele of weeks ago and got confirmation of that. Have a look at the How-Tos at www.e-smith.org - there are a pair there (under my name) on backing up to disk/restoring from disk using flexbackup (the backup utility used by default in SME). I recently had occasion to restore to a new server using the restore How-To because of the 2 GB limit. I had a list of the directories and files to enter in the extract file, but I had  problem on my W2K box, and have lost it. You don't need to restore everything, so be careful. You may want ot check the code for the desktop restore to see what it affects.
