Title: XP IMAP kills Network connection

I have a SME 5.1 server with an XP and Win98 clients. I noticed recently that ever since I enabled IMAP on my XP box the network connection would drop after about 30 mins and I'd have to repair the connection to keep working. I stopped using IMAP and moved back to POP3 and haven't had a problem since....Any ideas on the reason ?

Steven,

By "enabled IMAP", do you mean that you started using IMAP on a mail program
you use in Windows, or do you mean that you've turned on an IMAP server
on the XP machine?

Sorry for the unclear message....I set up IMAP in "Outlook distress" which was checking mail on my SME server at 5 min intervals.

Almost certainly an XP problem. I wonder what "repair the connection" actually means. Does Microsoft tell you (in any technically useful way)?

Doubtful.  How is IMAP different from any other service as far as the
client is concerned?  Data is simply transmitted from point A to point B.  
I'm betting the client app (say outlook express) is choking in someway,
thus making it appear that the connection is down.   Both Outlook and
Outlook Express exhibit very strange behavior when IMAP is used.  Try
switching email clients and see how things fair out.  I prefer a web
based IMAP client.  It's simply, runs on the server, and can be checked
from anywhere with a net connection.  My boss, on the other hand, hates
web based email clients and has learned to live with Outlook hiccups.

I have found Outlook and Outlook Express thrash and generally do not behave as expected with IMAP as stated above.

The latest Mozilla is extremely efficient with IMAP.

Make SURE you have optioned the client to NOT check ALL SUBSCRIBED FOLDERS or you will thrash into a coma.

The error message you are seeing is likely a withdrawal symptom as the MS clients are most happy only with the bloated Exchange server.
