We are pleased with E-smith 4.1 via cable @home.
But it works for a shorter or longer time, that means we can internet via two pc's , behind the e-smith server for some time.
These two pc, s have zone alarm installed.
After some time we cannot internet via the two pc 's, and with winipcfg win 98 at that moment after renew all it says:
The DHCP server is not availeble, and we have to reboot e-smith and it works again for a while ,
What would this be,
thanks for answering tinga.
ps :We can always reach the internet with the e-smith test on the server.
We only installed tcp/ip. ( we removed the rest, but no change ).

Remove 'Zone Alarm'. It is not needed if the pc's are behind the e-smith server.

I am having the same kind of problem and I am not running any firewall software on my windows machines. About 40% of the time if I issue a ipconfig /renew command in Win2k it will not update. The only way I can get it to work is to reboot the machine. In some cases I have to reboot the e-smith server machine too. Any suggestions would be welcome.

thanks for answering, Darrell and Ray.
We allready had moved zone alarm, but no changes.
When we download with ftp via E-smith from say Readhat the internet connection on the win machines stops very soon.
After a reboot of e-smith it works again for some minutes.
Normal internet via e-smith may stay ok for 10 to 30 minutes.
thanks tinga the netherlands

The problem doesn't lie with e-smith. Something is timing out on your Windows Workstation.

Are you quite positive there are no "power saving features" enabled on your motherboard? Some x86 BIOS can be quite agressive with "powering down unused PnP compliant devices" if it feels they are dormant for too long.
Best solution IMHO against this is to go into bios @ boot time and disable all powersaving features on the esmith server box. Just leave the monitor turned off (if you even have one attached, that is :-) and this is the biggest power saving feature you need :-)
just my 2 cents ...

I have similar DHCP problems.
Some 98 machines wont see the DHCP
server at all and some would. If I set a
static IP address on the machines that
does not see the DHCP server it works.
Any suggestions

Thanks for answering, but it did not help.
We took an other pc , installed E-smith 4.1 and within an hour it works superbe.
We did not change anything to the win machines,
