I have an e-smith 5.1.2 server @ work and I connect through to it by vpn from home.
Home is an XP pro box
I can ping the server no problem.
I know some of the other Ip's for boxes behind the server ,but when I try to ping them through the vpn I get a "destination host unreachable" returned from the ip of the server
Is this correct behaviour?

Are the machines you are pinging set to use the SME VPN server as a gateway? Also verify with ipconfig that you have an IP address assigned from your work LAN after VPN is connected.

Hi Ryan,
Yes they are set to use the SME server as a gateway. 192.168.1.1
The home machine is getting an ip on the vpn of 192.168.1.248 (from memory)

What is your home IP network address and subnet? If your home LAN is also using 192.168.1.x, then try changing it to a different subnet such as 192.168.10.x.

Ryan,
Thanks for trying to help.
This was only one of a number of problems we were having with 5.1.2. In the end we had to to do a fresh install and reverted to 5.0
I can now ping, print, and access files like I should be able to. I feel, from browsing around here, there are some issues that will take a little time to sort out in 5.1.2 be fore I'll try it again.

Thanks for the info. I was going to give 5.1.2 several months prior to doing an upgrade. It appears people in the forum are having enough problems with 5.1.2 that I am going to hold off until the next final release.
Besides, there is so much more in the how-tos and the forum regarding version 5.0, allowing a newbie like myself to do more with 5.0.

I would be very happy if I could simply add the quota tool in server manager 5.1.2 to SME 5.0. Anyone know if an RPM is available to install this utility?

This might be samba related. I've just posted a HowTo for upgrading samba to the latest stable release. Give this a try and report back if this solves your SME Server 5.1.2 issues.
